Jaggo (translating to "wake up") is a Punjabi ritual where the bride, groom, and their family and friends celebrate their upcoming wedding while reciting boliyan (couplets) and performing gidda (traditional Punjabi folk dance) and Bhangra around the neighbourhood.
Everyone is invited to take their turn dancing while a decorated earthen pot lit with candles (a gajjar) balances on their head. Historically, the Jaggo would allow the couple and their family to alert the village about their upcoming wedding - fortunately, we have other ways to spread the news nowadays but still embrace this tradition!

In Sikhism, the wedding ceremony is known as “Anand Karaj” (a blissful union), where the couple will marry in front of the Guru Granth Sahib (holy scripture of Sikhism). Guests will be seated around the couple, with men on one side and women on the other.
The event start with the Baraat (Groom and his family) joyously dancing and being greeted by the Bride's family at the venue. This is followed by a Milni (meeting of the families) where there is an exchange of haars (floral garland/necklace).
Following breakfast, guests will head to the courtyard for the wedding ceremony. The most significant part of a Sikh wedding ceremony is the Lavaan Phere (four hymns), during which the Bride is symbolically detaching from her parent's home and uniting with her husband and his family. The couple walks around the Guru Granth Sahib four times, at which time the couple is married. During the Anand Karaj, each verse signifies the union of the bride and groom, and emphasizes that they are two bodies with one soul.
IMPORTANT ATTIRE:
Indian attire is strongly encouraged (please refer to style guide for suggestions and colour palette). Please ensure your clothing is modest and covers your shoulders and legs. Guests will be seated on the ground during the ceremony (chairs will be provided for the elderly and those physically unable to sit on the ground). For those opting for non-Indian clothing, please ensure it is comfortable when seated cross-legged.
All guests will want to be sure to bring something to cover their heads during the ceremony. Bandanas (ramals) for men and scarfs (chunnis) for women. We will have spare head coverings available in case you forget! Please note, you will also need to remove your shoes for the ceremony.
